When covering LILLAKE a month ago as part of our Weekly Featured Artist section, I mentioned that founder Nico Santora was working on brand new material that he hoped to release later in 2018. Well, a small teaser for the forthcoming album, titled Memory Lies, has just been posted on their Facebook page. At only 28 seconds long, the video doesn’t give a lot away. It focuses solely on ambient sounds, reversed vocals, and filters. It does indicate that it will likely be an interesting progression from their debut, Become, as it feels distinctly different.
FINDING THE CLUES
There isn’t a firm release date for the album, with just a mysterious ‘coming soon in 2018’ tagline, but the video does also reveal some new artwork, which I assume will be the album cover. It’s pretty brutal and disturbing, and might give us some more vague clues. Combined with the title ‘Memory Lies’ and Santora’s emotional and personal lyric style, I do wonder if the album will feature themes based on suppressed/buried memories, perceptions of reality, and fake vs real people and personalities. Intriguing!
Although Become appeared in 2016, the band love to release new ideas and music outside of the usual album format. The last time we heard new material from LILLAKE was the track “A Grand Possession”. Santora confirmed, however, that this won’t feature on the forthcoming Memory Lies, which will be all brand new material.
LILLAKE supported the last album with a fairly extensive gigging schedule, including tours supporting high profile bands such as Megadeth, Meshuggah, and TesseracT. Expect some further news on both the album and touring plans later in 2018, alongside the full album release. The band’s debut album Become is a real favourite of mine. I’ve been waiting all year for this announcement, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. In the meantime, get familiar with Become as a warm-up to Memory Lies.
