New supergroup boygenius, comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, have released three songs from their upcoming, eponymous EP. Released to accompany a joint tour between the three artists, each song sees one of the singer-songwriters take the lead, meaning that they each sound like songs either artist could have released on their own rather than, necessarily, a true collaboration. The songs do appear to greatly benefit from the collaboration, though; the trio’s voices sound wonderful together, in the climax of pounding guitars and harmonised singing that each song inevitably climbs to.

The combination of artistic talent also appears to be a combination of production quality – it would be fair to say that each of the three thus-far released songs sound incredible. You can expect ambient washes under flawlessly recorded vocals and guitars, placed within songs made up of the darker and more brooding parts of each artist’s work.
