I find it very hard to contain my excitement over the news that just broke: American drone doom/country-tinged post-rock legends Earth, led by guitarist and main songwriter Dylan Carlson, are set to release a brand new studio full-length later this year! Having formed in 1989, the group released a handful of highly influential records that laid the groundwork for an entire genre; among their many dedicated disciples are bands like the unquestionable drone presence Sunn O))). After spending some time away due to personal issues between 1997 and 2000, Carlson re-emerged with a distinctly less heavy, and more country music-infused take on his previous signature style. Apparently, this philosophy hasn’t changed over the years between the release of their last record Primitive and Deadly (2014) and the creation of this new record, as you are soon to find out.
Full Upon Her Burning Lips will be out on May 24 via Sargent House, who also published Carlson’s most recent solo album last year. In conjunction with this most joyous announcement comes the first single off the album, “Cats on the Briar”. People who have loved everything Earth put out since 2005’s Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method will surely get their money’s worth out of this track, but relative newcomers to the band/genre might easily be swayed by its soothing melodies rooted in ‘Bakersfield Sound’ country music, earthy (pun intended) guitar tones, and pleasantly minimalist song structure as well.
Mixed and mastered by longtime Earth collaborator Mell Dettmer at Studio Soli, Full On Her Burning Lips is meant to bring a new sensual quality to the group’s already bewitching music. The record’s full tracklist has already been made available – you can peruse it below:
