Coming up with a cool intro can be a tedious task. Sometimes I’m very inspired and try to do something meaningful. Other times I just want to get on with it because we’re all here for the music. It’s a tough trade in the end. Wasting our time sucks. So ‘get on with the music’ it is in this case. September 2024, here we go!
BLOOM DREAM – It Didn’t Have To Be This Way
September 5 // Zegema Beach Records
Wait, didn’t I start the last episode of THE NOISE OF with a Zegema Beach record? Well, here we go again then. Florida-based skramz outfit Bloom Dream knew exactly how to reach my skramz heart, and they did it with grace and grit.
A Swarm of the Sun – An Empire
September 6 // Pelagic Records
Papangu – Lampião Rei
September 6 // Repose Records
Brazilian prog/extreme metal outfit Papangu is still something of a secret – and I’m a snob myself for rooting for them since the release of their last album, Holoceno. I’m glad that their new album Lampião Rei is getting some more attention, because this band deserves all the praise in the world.
Glacier – A Distant, Violent Shudder
September 6 // Wolves & Vibrancy Records/Post. Recordings
40 Watt Sun – Little Weight
September 6 // Cappio Records
Tender – FLUX
September 6 // Nettwerk
Pyrrhon – Exhaust
September 6 // Willowtip Records
Ned Collette – Our Other History
September 6 // Sophomore Lounge
One of the best folk records of the year. With a wide range of influences, this is as vibrant and colorful as it is tender and fragile.
Nala Sinephro – Endlessness
September 6 // Warp Records
Midwife – No Depression In Heaven
September 6 // The Flenser
Bremer/McCoy – Kosmos
September 6 // Luaka Bop
SPLIT SILK – Bitter
September 10 // Tomb Tree Tapes
Grindy and very raw ‘basement’ skramz, just the way I love it. Yes, my eternal love for skramz is largely based on nostalgia and how this type of music shaped my teenage years, and I will annoy my surroundings with this stuff all day, every day.
Henry Green – Familiarity
September 13 // Akira Records
WE ARE WINTER’S BLUE AND RADIANT CHILDREN – NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER
September 13 // Constellation Records
Great new project featuring BIG|BRAVE‘s Mat Ball and GY!BE’s Efrim Manuel Menuck. The right amount of pretentious, with ultra dense atmosphere.
Quarterly – Adonis
September 13 // Ruination Record Co.
Cool shit for people looking for some unusual modern classical stuff. Folky and whimsical, this new album from Quarterly is pure magic.
Saint Sadrill – Frater Crater
September 13 // Dur Et Deux
While it is true that my enthusiasm for Dur Et Doux has waned a bit in the years since I discovered the label, a new album from an artist like Saint Sadrill is always a reason to celebrate. As usual, nothing comes close.
Allysha Joy – The Making of Silk
September 13 // First Word
I have always admired Allysha Joy‘s music for scratching the itch that Hiatus Kaiyote only scratched – and the fact that instead of going more pop at one point, which Allysha could have easily and successfully done, she chose to add more jazz and more complexity without sacrificing catchiness or accessibility. So fucking good.
Wendy Eisenberg – Viewfinder
September 13 // American Dreams
Colin Stetson – The love it took to leave you
September 13 // Invada
Lea Thomas – Cosmos Forever
September 20 // Triple Dolphin Records
LICE – Third Time at the Beach
September 20 // AD 93
GOD IS WAR – Boogeyman Inc.
September 20 // Profound Lore Records
Groza – Nadir
September 20 // AOP Records
Just good stuff. Black Metal is a tricky genre to get right because it’s so buried in clichés and aesthetics and the spark of something really good is hard to achieve. I never heard of Groza before, but they have a way of playing with dynamics and pulse that makes it really special.
Clinic Stars – Only Hinting
September 20 // kranky
We all know it – kranky always delivers. The new Clinic Stars is drenched in gawky melancholy from top to bottom, and it feels so good to be around it. There is a certain timelessness to Only Hinting that I love, while at the same time it strangely reminds me of Elliott Smith. Wild.
Nubya Garcia – Odyssey
September 20 // Concord Jazz
Joan As Police Woman – Lemons, Limes and Orchids
September 20 // PIAS
Joan As Police Woman‘s 2021 album The Solution Is Restless is not only one of the last recordings by the great Tony Allen, it’s also one of my favorite albums of the last few years – so naturally I’m very excited about what’s to come. With Lemons, Limes and Orchids, Joan Wasser once again channels smooth soul and timeless pop into warmth and love.
Giver – The Future Holds Nothing But Confrontation
September 20 // End Hits Records
Germany’s core scene these days is mostly a tragedy – despite some good shit in the underground, it mostly consists of lazy rehashing of American trends, often 5 years too late. So imagine my surprise when I found out that Giver, a phenomenal hardcore band, come from Cologne. There is hope folks, because this album is fantastic.
Circus Trees – This makes me sad, and I miss you
September 20 // Fly By Two Records
Blue Heron – Everything Fades
September 27 // Blues Funeral Recordings
CLBRKS & NickyDiesel – CLBELLIC
September 27 // Rhythm Section International
Tommy Richman – COYOTE
September 27 // ISO Supremacy/Pulse Records
Yeah. I like that. I also think “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” is one of the best songs of the year. The album doesn’t have the same punch as his breakout singles, but it’s still a sweet nostalgia trip.
Show Me The Body – CORPUS II
September 27 // Independent
Montell Fish – CHARLOTTE
September 27 // JCM
I absolutely did not expect it to hit me that hard. This record destroyed me in the best possible way. Absolutely phenomenal, forward thinking and very intimate portrayal of a fascinating artist. One of the best albums of the year.
Michelle – Songs About You Specifically
September 27 // Transgressive
Criminally catchy, I’ve danced to this album more times than I care to admit (once). We need more records like this – just super fucking smooth, every song is on point. Did I mention how incredibly catchy it is?
The Irrepressibles – Yo Homo
September 27 // Transgressive
Aside from having one of the best album titles of the year, Yo Homo is full of great ideas and blends different styles like indie pop, post punk, and electronica with ease and elegance. If you are straight, this album might change your mind. I’m straight, but seriously tempted.
ALAN SPARHAWK – White Roses, My God
September 27 // Sub Pop
As Living Arrows – Hope and Ruin
September 27 // I.Corrupt.Records/Best Life Records
Thanks for scrolling.
