We at Everything Is Noise pride ourselves in offering you a glimpse of exciting acts worthy of your attention, no matter how zany or ambitious they may be – it’s all great stuff. This premiere in particular would fall under the latter as we introduce you to French post-metal outfit Homecoming and a studio recording session for their newest single “Shores”, from their forthcoming sophomore album Those We Knew. The band states how the record’s ‘gloomy, heavy, sometimes hushed 90s tones collide with endless imagination, peppered by ethereal atmospheres, enticing introspection‘, and “Shores” captures this merging of sounds beautifully with a multi-faceted 11-minute journey through the nebulous expanses of grief, further showcasing a tasteful blend between aggression, contemplation, and all-around infectious songwriting.
Frontman Theo Alves Guiter comments on the concept behind the single:
‘“Shores” is a song about my grandfather, and where his ashes were spread. Sometimes, I still feel him here with me. I hope to live my life well enough to respect his. Those who came before us always go too soon, leaving us reeling in their absence, unable to accept the bitter reality that we didn’t bid them farewell correctly. All we can do is recall the joy of their passage here and the lessons which they imparted unto us.‘
The remainder of “Shores” exponentially broadens and grants you an emotional endeavor with sharp turns that are both fiery and resonating. Homecoming indeed concoct this blend of doom, prog, alternative metal, and even touches of stoner and melodic death metal in ways that never seem jarring. The vocals showcase an impressive range, too – from being plaintive and despondent to cavernous growls and expressive screams – consonant to the highs and lows of the often-murky grieving process. The cohesiveness displayed with these musical stylings and the transitions that arise out of each other makes the track an exciting and dynamic listen, to the point of doubt on the song and video’s length, honestly. If anything, “Shores” is absolutely a strong teaser for what to expect on this record and I, for one, am immediately sold on Homecoming and their captivating brand of post-metal.
Those We Knew is set to be released on April 19 via Copper Feast Records. If you want more of what you hear, make sure to follow the band’s Bandcamp, Instagram, and Facebook pages!
