If you didn’t get the hint, there is some solid post-black metal coming your way as we at Everything Is Noise are premiering the new Kiova EP, Empty Field and Smoke-filled Skies.
Kiova are releasing Empty Field and Smoke-filled Skies on October 30 as a lead-up to their upcoming LP which is planned to be released next year; well, at least if current and upcoming events allow things to work out that way. Regarding the music itself, this EP has great balance between the atmospheric and moody sections along with the gritty, abrasive sound we’ve come to love when it comes to black and post-metal. This isn’t necessarily taking the genre to any new heights by any means, but it’s a consistently solid and well put together effort.
Empty Fields and Smoke-filled Ashes is a brief yet undeniably cathartic release that delves into Slavic mythology and Lovecraftian fantasy while telling stories about the emotional pain that comes with death and loss. Thematically, you could compare this to The Great Old Ones while musically, Kiova can be compared to the likes of Downfall of Gaia and Fall of Efrafa for example, as this group puts more emphasis on post-metal and not just black metal. Although quite raw, the mood that Kiova creates in their music is varied enough to keep you engaged through the slightly longer run times on the tracks on Empty Fields…
Given how new Kiova are and their plans to release an LP in the somewhat near future, I am definitely excited to hear how they grow as a band and follow up Empty Fields and Smoke-Filled Ashes.
