If you’ve an itch for that 90s/early 2000s alternative metal that just won’t quit, then I’ve got just the thing for it! Following the acclaim from their last album Push (which we run two premieres for here and here), alternative metal band Sons of Alpha Centauri plan to push things even further (heh) with their newest effort Pull, and we’re excited to bring you the first snippet in the form of lead single “Ephemeral”!
Sons of Alpha Centauri is a very dynamic band hailing from England. Starting as an instrumental post metal and post rock act, their third album Push saw the band feature vocals from Jonah Matranga, making them pretty much the official heirs of post hardcore legends Far and Gratitude, and the golden collab is back in full effect for Pull. While the core identity of SOAC can be defined as post metal, the band’s sound plays around with tons of genres and aims for heavy, emotional driven songs backed by meaty riffs. The melodic vocals from Jonah bring even more to the table and it all fits so well you’d swear he’s always been with them. If I were to describe it to someone, I’d just go with really damn cool as that’s the gist of it, but I’ll try my best to encourage you to hit that play button.
“Ephemeral” plays around with and features elements from many realms of alternative and modern metal. With a catchy and grungy main riff that’s followed by incredibly nuanced and powerful vocals from Jonah, the 90s vibes are very real and ranging all the way from Alice In Chains to Faith No More in its initial moments. Somehow, it transcends genres even further with a hook that rivals what the better progressive metal bands are doing and even manages to take a lot from classic Deftones, too. It’s a perfect blend of classic and modern within the alternative metal world and just tasty from beginning to end. If you’re even remotely interested in any of that, it’s now time to hit play on that button (if you haven’t already).
“Ephemeral” is everything you want from a lead single – it’s a catchy and fun tune that leaves you wanting more. And according to the band, it’s a pretty good taste on what’s to come:
‘Ephemeral was the first track Jonah cut in the studio and it just burst out of him. His soaring vocals and the pulse of the track set the tone for the whole record in the studio and as soon as he laid it down we knew the whole record was going to be next level. Jonah reflects on everything and this track is his signature uplifting style wrapped in a riff impossible not to sink into – check it!‘.
If that piques your interest, do check out their previous album, as Pull is meant to be a direct follow-up in sound and concept to Push. You can check it via the band’s Bandcamp while you wait for Pull to come out on March 28th via Exile on Mainstream. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
