All right, no fancy intros. We don’t have time for that, but you know what we do have time for? Good music.
Today, we’re enamored to spend some time with Grant The Sun, no stranger to the Everything Is Noise team. They’re a trio of pals interested in pounding riffs, post-rock atmospheres, and a vibe sent from space itself. Their new EP Sur Jupiter is fully on offer today as we assist in premiering it for the Norwegian group. It’s a meaty sound with none other than Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah, though I’m sure most of you knew that) on bass!
Honestly, knowing that Thordendal is on this EP explains quite a lot, namely how the rhythms gallop to and fro’, the progressive tendencies the songs lean hard into, and the density of it all. Let’s be fair though – Grant The Sun have navigated these starry seas before, and for quite some time, which makes the Meshuggahn elements just mesh all the better.
There’s a lot more to it as well. Even when things are heavy – which is often – everything has a floatiness to it. The music has a clear orbit as cymbals crash and guitars chug away, but you can’t help but feel a lightness to it all. When the music opens up and allows itself to breathe in, you feel that weight lift and you’re allowed to bask in the grandeur of it all. There’s guitar melodies in the title track that even invoke some Joe Satriani tone. Maybe that’s just me, though.
This EP has a lick of unpredictability to it which keeps you engaged and intent on learning the curvature and construction on how each standout moment was achieved. Grant The Sun steadily keep impressing with what they’re able to craft on their project, and their consistent release schedule assures you’re never left hanging for long. Sur Jupiter a short trip, but one well worth taking as you can enjoy it in just about any capacity – no ticket to space necessary.
The sun may be granted to you as well if you were to like the band on Facebook. Grant The Sun are releasing Sur Jupiter in collaboration with Mas-Kina Recordings on December 20. Look for it to show up on your favorite streaming services then!
