A long time ago, some dude once said ‘In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and that ArcTanGent Festival will have a baller lineup’. Alright, there may be a slight misquote there, but that doesn’t make it any less true. And ArcTanGent 2026 is here to prove it.
If you’re interested in any kind of heavy music that deviates from the norm, you’ve probably stumbled on this name before. ArcTanGent, once a small niche festival located in the outskirts of Bristol, UK, is now a household name in the European summer festival scene for lovers of progressive metal, post rock, math rock, stoner and any other music genre that would make you coworker give you the side eye. Not only does it continue to deliver remarkable lineups year after year, it maintains its roots as a community gathering where every music lover is welcome. I’ve been there three times already, and by this point, it’s hard for me to imagine sitting one edition out.

Take a deep breath now. Picture: ArcTanGent Festival
To no one’s surprise, ArcTanGent 2026 is once again looking like the European summer festival to attend this year. I’d argue this is the most diverse lineup curation from recent years, pushing genre boundaries further than ever. Of course we have our usual delectable doses of all the genres you’d expect at ATG, but we also have many acts which defy labeling in the traditional sense. I mean, we’re talking about a mostly metal festival with a dark / gothic folk headliner in Chelsea Wolfe, and we also have Primus. What genre even is Primus? And can you even think of any other heavy music festival with not one, but two women as headliners? Didn’t think so.
Another thing that makes ATG stand out amongst other festival is the amount of things you won’t experience anywhere else. From reunion shows, to farewell gigs and world exclusive shows, there’s plenty that makes this edition unique. I’m uber excited for many shows really, but I’ve highlighted some of my most anticipated here.
One of Svalbard‘s final live performances
Goodbyes are always hard, but it’s nice when a band can go out on their own terms. Svalbard carved a name for themselves as one of the most essential post hardcore bands of the last few years, and after many years on the road, the band will perform some of their final shows this year. ATG ’26 will host their final ever performance at any UK festival, and I can already tell that it’s gonna be a heavy and emotional set. I mean, Svalbard is heavy and emotional by default, so double that for a farewell show. If you’ve some tears waiting to shed, this might be the place to let it all out.
The glorious return of Arcane Roots
One can’t stay sad about farewell shows for long when you’ve got a much anticipated reunion soon after. Returning from an eight year hiatus, the progressive and alternative metal standouts Arcane Roots are finally back, and ArcTanGent 2026 will be amongst their first performances since then.
I’ve became acquainted with their music very recently, and their immaculate hooks and beautiful proggy melodies soared them to the top of my must-see list. With a new album around the corner and huge anticipation, expect one of the liveliest sets of the weekend! By the way, the fact they’re clashing with the great Múr on their slot? Criminal. But that’s what happens when you have a stacked lineup.
Oathbreaker rises back from the ashes
While we’re talking about comebacks, I couldn’t forget mentioning that the astonishing Oathbreaker is back. Their music is some of the most intricate, unique, and intense forms of black metal and post hardcore you’ll ever find. I was hoping they’d play ATG from the very moment they reformed, and here they are! One should always manage their expectations, but I do expect a mindblowing performance, so good luck out there Oathbreaker!
Oh by the way, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza are also a recently reformed band playing ATG. I’m seeing a pattern here. Can I already ask for Neurosis next year? Please and thank you.
Maruja are playing. Hell yeah.
That’s honestly all I need to know to be beyond hyped. There’s very few up and coming artists that have impressed me as much as Maruja does right now. Their debut full length album Pain to Power was my personal AOTY for 2025, and I just can’t wait to witness their beautiful chaos unfold live. They also played ATG in 2024, and they got a much well deserved slot upgrade for this year. No one is doing it like Maruja, and if you have any love for excellent and unique music, you’ll join me for this set.
Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas celebrating 10 years of Mariner
This is the big one for me. Over here at EIN, we’ve recently talked about how much Mariner means to some of us and how it shook the scene upon its release. Ten years later, the album is nothing short of legendary, both in its uniqueness and just how grandiose it is. ArcTanGent pulled the insane feat of reuniting post metal masters Cult of Luna with the one and only Julie Christmas for a one-off celebration of Mariner.
I’ve never been graced with the opportunity to see Cult of Luna live before, so having my first show of theirs being a Mariner show is just a dream for me. I did manage to see Julie Christmas when she played ArcTanGent 2024, and her performance was second to none – raw, intense, and enthralling, even moreso than you’d expect it to be. Seeing her again, this time performing her musical opus? My soul is not ready.
This isn’t happening anywhere else in the world, by the way. So if this album means something to you, well, you should try your best to be there. Who knows when something like this will happen again? Few festivals manage to achieve this level of pull, and a performance like this is a testament to how much ArcTanGent is now a giant on the heavy music festival scene.
Those are just some of the sets that have me giggling in expectation. There’s plenty more I can’t wait for, like Agent Fresco, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, Chat Pile, Chelsea Wolfe, Cardiacs, Papangu, Psychonaut, BRUIT ≤, Overhead, the Albatross… I’m not even counting some of the bands I don’t know yet – if there’s one thing that’s always worth doing at ArcTanGent is discovering new artists you didn’t know before. There’s always a ton of gems in the undercard, trust me.
If you’re even remotely interested in the lineup, I’d advise you to seriously consider this. Few festivals are as welcoming, well-organized, and just plain fun like ArcTanGent is. This edition has been a tremendous success in sales and is well on the way to selling out soon – there’s even a sale for the last batch going on as I type this – so grab your tickets ASAP.
Hope to see you there!
