The lockdown measures implemented around the world due to COVID-19 has struck us down in a myriad of ways, but there is a silver lining to all of this for our creative friends. As some might say, creativity flourishes from isolation. Everything Is Noise is proud to premiere Holt’s latest single “Luna” off her upcoming and first instrumental EP, Painted Sound. With this EP being a product of COVID-19, London multi-instrumentalist Amy Holt provides us a glimpse of how to find solace and build self-empowerment through music in times of turmoil such as these.
In a similar fashion to a movie score, “Luna” flows like a narrative, starting out with a serene piano melody, slowly increasing intensity until reaching to a climax of satisfying bliss. The subtle sound collage samples and the clicks coming from the piano keys is also a plus, showcasing the authenticity of this track and the organic feeling of being in the moment. It is a conscious effort to stand back and observe the things that have and are currently unfolding, to then build something new out of it all.
In addition, the official video accompanying this single is gorgeous. Every shot included here is simple, but evokes a lot of emotions. The visual glitches spread throughout give the video a unique flair, suggesting a letting out of struggles and reserved distress as a way to cope or to accept vulnerability. Simply put, it is sheer escapism condensed into a beautiful three-minute story.
Though melancholic, “Luna” is a testament to being resilient. With this track, Holt grants us a cinematic experience in music form, giving us the opportunity to make sense of the times we’re currently living in. Masterfully played and emotionally intense, the track serves as an excellent teaser for what I’m sure is going to be an excellent EP.
