Grief and shame are nasty business, if left untended. These feelings can linger inside of you for years, sometimes, just waiting to be picked at, opened up like a scab that refuses to heal leaking its staining and fetid blood and pus into your psyche tainting the better parts of you through cycles of paranoia and doubt. Sometimes you need catharsis while dealing with these unhealed wounds, and for me, hardcore and metal music efficiently takes on that task. It isn’t a cure so much as a treatment, but the effects balm life’s wounds as much as they excite the sense. Norway’s Korrupt are excellent purveyors of this aggression-laced salve, and on “Being Paranoid”, the third single from their forthcoming LP, The Weight We Carry, confronts this very issue. Check it out!
“Being Paranoid” opens with a blackened, gothic guitar riff that welcomes in a medium-paced groove and shredding vocals. This black’n’roll leads to a fist-pumping, anthemic chorus that recalls acts like Comeback Kid or The Hope Conspiracy, though Kvelertak may be the most obvious reference point. The verse-chorus-verse approach is complete with a rad guitar solo and gives this otherwise hardcore track a straightforward rock song vibe, keeping the heavy subject matter at bay with its directness and urge to rock out for with big hooks and catchy melodies. Korrupt says, ‘It’s probably our most accessible song,’ which hopefully means more people will hear it and in doing so exercise their own demons. This track is as healing as it is fun.
The Weight We Carry promises to be a very fun album. Previous singles, “Devoted To The Grave” and “Waiting For The Sun” also rip, and their blackened vibes are fitting for the oncoming bite of autumn’s wind. Holler Records will release The Weight We Carry, Korrupt‘s third full-length on October 30th. Pre-orders are up on Bandcamp, and you can follow Korrupt on Facebook and Instagram!
