We’ve already had a couple of killer premieres on Everything Is Noise this week. Well, it’s not over yet baby, and you’ve hit the motherload because we don’t just have one release – we’ve got four brand new songs from four bands! Premiering today, we have a new split of new eardrum decimating noise and sludge material from Great Falls, Cell Press, Anthesis, and Worry. You lucky ducks.
So, funnily enough, before sitting down to listen to this four way split, I was reading Eeli’s article for our Bank Myna premiere. He waxed lyrical about the enjoyment of immense sound in his intro, stating ‘There is something unbelievably enjoyable in hefty walls of sound…’ and I couldn’t agree more. Except with this release, the immense wall of sound has sprouted multiple arms that tear at your clothes and try to choke the shit out of you while yelling abuse. Luckily, that’s my kink, so I’m in my happy place listening to Great Falls / Cell Press / Anthesis / Worry.
This is a short and sweet blast of fierce sludge wrapped up in noise rock packaging, with each band taking their allotted time to kick the listener in the teeth, giving you a different flavour of steel-toed boot to savour each time.
If you are new to any of the bands, this split, like all splits, is a great means of introduction to some brand music that are in a similar vein. Great Falls are a barrage of grind fused sludge and noise that is as fecklessly destructive as it is ridden with emotion. Bringing the chunky riffs are Cell Press, a group who are new to me but instantly have me on board with their swampy, groove laden brand of noise rock.
With the longest track on the split, Anthesis, sound like they are a sewer raised hardcore punk band that were forced fed grindcore and doom for breakfast, both nutritional and violent. Last but not least, Worry brings some semblance of balance to the split. While they certainly don’t shy away from being immensely heavy, they are unique in using quieter, more ‘melodic’ (if this is a term that can truly makes sense in relation to sludge/noise rock) sections to create both juxtaposition and distress.
If you enjoy Great Falls / Cell Press / Anthesis / Worry (or if you just love that great album art) then be sure to support the bands by picking up a vinyl copy from Roman Numeral (US), Ancient Temple Recordings (CA), or 7DegreesRecords (EU).
