It’s been three years since the release of Made of Breath Only – now, Australian post-rockers sleepmakeswaves are back and about to release their new album These Are Not Your Dreams on July 17, 2020. Instead of releasing the record all at once, though, they decided to release a series of three EPs over a few months. No Safe Place was already released earlier this year; today, we’re premiering “Pyramids” off the second EP called Out Of Hours before it officially drops tomorrow, on June 5.
“Pyramids” starts with a rising tension that soon gets its harmonic background from clean guitar chords. Sleepmakeswaves use their momentum to build this song up in a very calm and mesmerizing way. The simplicity of the band’s bass playing adds pace, while the drums carry the beat.

At this point, “Pyramids” isn’t finished with building its wall of sound; its shapes continue to sharpen together until the rock beat comes in. The melodic guitar work is omnipresent, which creates a veil around the harmonice background. There’s a slightly technical approach to the progressive post-rock sound of “Pyramids”, especially within the techy, rhythmic passages. At no point do sleepmakeswaves lose their focus on ambiance and atmosphere – they uphold an intriguing dynamic over the song’s entire playtime of eight minutes. At times the band take a step back and lead the listener into minimalistic, atmospheric rock passages, while at others they tend to break out of their washy clouds into a thunderstorm of aggressive sounds.
The pulsating synthesizers tie “Pyramids” together and build bridges in between the contrastful interplay of sleepmakeswaves’ dynamics. This song takes its full playtime to culminate all these aspects into one big finale. Said finale is rather heavy, with some metal elements that truly push for an uplifting mood. Powerful, energetic, aggressive – these terms truly fit on the ending of “Pyramids”, which is a good song to get excited about the band’s upcoming EP!
As bassist, and keyboarder Alex Wilson states:
‘”Pyramids” marries cosmic space-rock noodling with stupidly boneheaded riffs, and I love it for that reason. The original exotic melody was kicking around in my head and getting demoed back in the Made of Breath Only album days but it took a while for us to give it the time it deserved. This is one I really can’t wait to play live.’
Sleepmakeswaves will be releasing their third EP Not An Exit on July 3, while the full album These Are Not Your Dreams will be released on July 17. The album touches on modern life and how the Internet is invading our brains. Initially, the band planned a tour to accompany the release of their album, but due to the current pandemic, this tour is now set for 2021.
