Splits have been an incremental part of the underground (using that term extremely loosely here) movements for as long as anyone can remember, and they’ve played a rather important part in bringing new artists and their music to new audiences. The concept, that’s very simple and straightforward, lends itself to many uses, the cross promotion aspect being confirmed to work quite well. Just get two or more bands in the same cover under a shared title and that’s that, everybody wins.
Subsound Records have ran their namesake split series for a while now, and as the number 10 entry into that foray, the psychedelic post metal quartet Viscera/// and heavy psych act Tons came together to mold a monolith of a release, and today we’re teaming up with the formerly mentioned of the duo, and bring you the video for the track “Celebrate Death”! So, do as the title suggests, and dig in from below;
Viscera/// have been perfecting their craft since 2000, having released three albums and the mentioned split while touring extensively throughout their career, with an anticipated fourth record in the pipeline. I’ve personally come across them a few times in the past and have always enjoyed their rather formless concoction of genres, somehow managing to create something new out of standard frameworks while doing it seamlessly. This latest video cut is a great example of exactly that, bringing together a variety of tonalities while sounding exactly like themselves.
As for “Celebrate Death” and its accompanying video, the band had the following to say;
‘“Celebrate Death” is the third official video ever released by Viscera///, the second one directed by Lorenzo Fassina, underground horror artist and co-founder of Cine Underground festival. The chemistry between images and the sonic opus is once again outstanding, in order to create a disturbing, psychedelic and raw piece of art. Both the director and the band proudly claim that no money was spent on the making.‘
The no-budget video emphasizes on the psych aspect to provide a nice visual counterpart for the song itself, as we’re met with granularized neon shimmers and recycled footage, showing that you can indeed do anything as long as the will to do it is there. The half-a-head-and-torso presence of the vocalist is enough to bring in a sense of humanity and the overarching band itself, and the entirety is just a fuzzy feel-good vibe to match the track perfectly.
The mentioned split with Tons is out now on Subsound Records, and you can catch the entirety over here, and throw Viscera/// a follow over on FB to keep an eye out for that fourth album headed your way later this year.
