I’ve loved post-rock for as long as I can remember, even though it comes with its caveats. While we have as many bands pushing the envelope as we have those rehashing the old tropes, and the frontiers often seem a bit more contained and reserved than with many other genres, when something hits, it hits like a damn freight train. One could say it’s a difficult genre to navigate in, which isn’t necessarily too far from the truth, but trusting your gut and your ears first and foremost, usually gives you the sense of purpose to withstand the mundane to make discoveries. Today, we’re getting well-acquainted with the latter.
The Glasgow-based instrumental post-rock outfit in:tides are gearing up to release their debut full-length through Ripcord Records, and today, we’re glad to team up with the folks to bring you the album opener “Procession”, simultaneously being the first taste of off the record. So pull your post-pants on and get swept away into the quartet’s dynamic and picturesque, texturally charged tonal world from below;
Before digging into it, let’s hear some facts straight from the horse’s mouth;
‘“Procession” is the opening track and first single from the album, built around a driving rhythm and a melodic hook that gradually evolves throughout the track. The theme is dark, open to interpretation and like the name suggests, the track is a continuous series of events that offers the first glimpse into what the album has to offer.‘
Even though in:tides are relatively new players in the game, they sure have the grip of someone who have been in it for quite some time. “Procession” is not only a damn fine song, but up to par with the genre’s forefathers, in the way it employs rhythm and atmosphere to weave together a fleet of sound that has a clear heading without missteps or erroneous blunders. Even if the baseline is simple, the constantly growing and evolving ambiance captures the listener and in addition to redeeming expectations, also sets a fair amount of promises most likely to be kept with the rest of the new album.
Post-rock has always been a patient person’s playground, and on “Procession”, in:tides showcases their ability to craft delicate yet powerful aural tapestries by means of intensity and prowess, things both beautiful and haunting. The cinematic hues are theirs to produce an ample amount of vivid imagery to the listener’s psyche, and allow for us to come up with our own connotations and interpretations of everything at hand – or in our ears, to be more precise. This is post-rock done right.
