When a generation carries the weight of decades of mistakes and straight-out incompetence from supposed leaders, with gazes towards a horizon that seems to progressively lose its shine as the days pass – it all eventually takes a toll on people. “Empty Generation” is what Brooklyn-based chaotic hardcore outfit DETACH THE ISLANDS call them, and to convey these expressions of brimming distress and frustration, the band saw fit to use its namesake as the title for their newest single, a track that we at Everything Is Noise are absolutely excited to premiere.
“Empty Generation” is, no exaggeration, a demonstration of fiery anger performed with the highest calibre. Being a ‘rallying cry against being the ones left behind to fix the world…‘, DETACH THE ISLANDS (consisting of members of Fluoride, Juan Bond, Thin, Husbandry, and Semaphore) made sure to leave no gaps nor doubts on what it truly means to snap at the seemingly never-ending onslaughts of ‘economic exploitation, climactic trauma, and mental depletion‘. To them, the future is entirely shrouded by a neglected past, and “Empty Generation” is the match that has finally struck against years and years of survival that is, ultimately, proving to be all in vain.
Panic chords charge forward within the confines of throttling hardcore and at the behest of impressively scorching vocals. The track further takes these sounds and mold them into varying, grimy hues of skramz, sludge, and post-hardcore with relentless instrumentation, only executed with a collective spirit that is evidently defeated. This is especially clear throughout the midsection where the following lines are howled midst a cacophonous display of sheer resentment:
‘I wanted to speak the beautiful language of my centuryBut it will have to be mutedWe will be remembered for holding our world stillSo that yours didn’t completely collapseI wanted to speak the beautiful language of my centuryBut it will have to be muted.‘
“Empty Generation” is the teaser for DETACH THE ISLANDS‘ forthcoming full-length A Highly Magnified History, which will see the light of day on July 19th via Tomb Tree. If sonic frenzy crafted to shit on the ineptitude of the world is something that is right up your alley, then definitely make sure to follow the band’s Bandcamp, Instagram, and Facebook pages for more!
