For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the days are getting shorter, the nights longer, and the air ever colder. This seems an incredibly appropriate time for our latest premiere – “Capricorn”, the new video single for Dawnwalker’s upcoming album, The Unknowing.
Hailing from London and with an impressive six releases already under their belt, Dawnwalker specialise in a style of prog rock that bleeds into metal, art rock, and post rock. Their sound on “Capricorn” is delightfully mellow, while maintaining a dark edge throughout, with an arcane whimsy that’s as intriguing as it is intoxicating. With eyes closed, the song immediately transports the listener somewhere beyond the physical; starting with a dulcet organ, which is soon joined by restrained drums, burnished guitar, pulsating bass, and mantric vocals, it immediately creates an atmosphere of hazy, expansive serenity.
The song undulates, forming natural valleys and peaks, none of which feel abrupt or disrupt its natural flow. The chorus is warm and light as a feather cloak, the following guitar solo liquid silk. Even the more rhythmically assertive bridge doesn’t feel like a leap, just a brief change in direction, a quick look over your shoulder to see if anyone is following this astral journey. “Capricorn” expands into full psychedelia right near the end, everything pushing and swelling, all guns blazing in what is undoubtedly its heaviest section – and still there is an incredible clarity, almost a calm, in amongst the hugeness of its climax.
With eyes open, the video to “Capricorn” only underlines what the song already conjures up on its own. The colour scheme of blue, black, red, and gold fits so well that I couldn’t imagine it being otherwise. Dark, clean shots of the band playing are interspersed with hazy scenes of a knight out in the cold, and images of crystal balls, Tarot cards, and weeping candles. The whole atmosphere is a little medieval, a little witchy, a little modern, and 100% classy.
Having consulted with mystics, Tarot readers, and astrologers throughout the album’s writing, Mark Norgate, the musical mastermind behind Dawnwalker, states:
‘The album deals with grand themes that we’ve been reaching for throughout our whole discography. It is a doomed attempt to solve the grand mysteries of existence that pays homage to so many astrologers, soothsayers, mystics, faith healers, cult leaders and charlatans. It’s about the attainment of knowledge, but also an acceptance of a kind of un-knowing, making peace with your own insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe and yet still being able to gaze in wonder at it all.’
The Unknowing releases digitally and on vinyl on October 18 – secure your copy of it here, and make sure to stay up-to-date with Dawnwalker‘s mystical motions by following them on Facebook and through their website.
