Oh man, here we go again. I’ve been thinking about how long I’ve been doing this feature, and let me tell you – it goes way back. Like waaaaaaay back. Like ancient times, when ancient tombs were written in 0’s and 1’s and chugga chugga. The definition of insanity and all that. August 2024, show me what you got!

ØKSE – ØKSE
August 9 // Backwoodz Studioz
Super exciting jazz quartet making their debut on Backwoodz Studioz – with words by ELUCID and billy woods, among others. A fantastic marriage of modern jazz and hip hop, this record deserves way, way more attention!
Milton Nascimento & Esperanza Spalding – Milton + esperanza
August 9 // Concord Jazz
Hohnen Ford – I Wish I Had A God
August 9 // Young Poet
Duhkha – A Place You Can’t Come Back From
August 9 // Good Fight
Alora Crucible – Oak Lace Apparition
August 9 // House of Mythology
beabadoobee – This Is How Tomorrow Moves
August 9 // Dirty Hit
I’ve been following beabadoobee for years now, and while I’ve always enjoyed their music, it never really connected with me. For some strange reason, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, probably their most pop album to date, is the one that really sold me on this project. There is an undeniable charm in these songs, and I’m all for it.
Your Arms Are My Cocoon – death of a rabbit
August 11 // Independent
Melinda Sullivan & Larry Goldings – Big Foot
August 16 // Colorfield Records
This beautiful record is just pure vibrancy – it breathes, it lives. As some of you may know, I love music that is cool to have in the background, but can also be super rewarding when you focus on it – Big Foot is just that. Very full, but not overwhelming, full of detail, but not crowded. Just right.
Jessica Ackerley – All Of the Colours Are Singing
August 16 // AKP Recordings
Les Rallizes Denudes – YaneUra Oct. ’80
August 16 // Temporal Drift
This is not something I would normally feature here, but the live recording of a show by legendary Japanese psych-rock outfit Les Rallizes Denudes is too awesome not to share. If this is just a glimpse of how mind-blowingly awesome it must have been to be there, I can’t wait to hop in that time machine when some nerd finally invents it.
HILLSBORO – White Trash
August 23 // Softseed Music
Föhn – Condescending
August 23 // Hypaethral Records
I was pretty stunned how good this was when we premiered it a few weeks ago. Awesome and not buried under cliches, this Greek funeral doom combo is a real gem for anyone into this kind of music.
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE – YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING
August 23 // Saddle Creek
Luna Li – When a Thought Grows Wings
August 23 // In Real Life
Dawn Treader – Bloom & Decay
August 23 // Liminal Dread Productions
Entropy – Dharmakāya
August 30 // Crazysane Records
Anciients – Beyond the Reach of the Sun
August 30 // Season Of Mist
Copse – MMXXIV
August 30 // Church Road Records
Really nice post-black metal with a lot of post – reminds me how much I miss Oathbreaker. Also, can we talk about what a crazy streak Church Road Records is on this year? Everything is a hit.
Barker / Parker / Irabagon – Bakunawa
August 30 // Out Of Your Head Records
Sometimes jazz needs to be challenging – like an avalanche of notes and ticks. Embrace the chaos and find the pulse.
ENDON – Fall of Spring
August 30 // Thrill Jockey Records/Daymare Recordings
Yuko Araki – Zenjitsutan 前日譚
August 30 // Room40
So, how about another Japanese noise extravaganza? Yuko Araki is a sound sorceress, and the walls of hard noise will crush you until you are the sweetest little ball. It is so extraordinarily massive. The beauty of this kind of music is that you stop trying to understand what’s happening and just let it wash over you. Noise me, senpai.
Why Bonnie – Wish On The Bone
August 30 // Fire Talk
Duster – In Dreams
August 30 // Numero Group
Lia Kohl – Normal Sounds
August 30 // Moon Glyph
