Anthesis are back! Again! The underground metallic noise rockers have returned to deliver their third album Tension Between Rot and Genesis. This is their first major release since 2017’s The Age of Self, which was itself their first full length in seven years at the time. The trio reside somewhere in the realm of abrasive sludge and mountain-moving crushing noise rock. They’ve actually been around since 2006 and like a plague of locusts they have resurfaced once again to deliver a brutal pestilence of pulverizing tones and gripping hooks. Today we’re premiering the music video for “Burrowing a Pit” the first single off their upcoming album.
The music video for “Burrowing a Pit” is a 50’s style black and white affair. It starts off kinda Leave it to Beaver, but by the end it’s much more Twilight Zone. Exploring themes of discomfort, madness, time, and grief. In any case the aesthetic fits the cacophonous music quite well suffocating with uncanny nostalgia. Around two minutes into the pummeling “Burrowing a Pit” strips down to just drums. The guitar slowly builds and returns to the same riffage the track has been grinding away to with increased intensity and a bit more heavy noise elements on the low end. It’s heavy to the point of hypnosis.
Their third album sees Anthesis pushing outside their comfort zone. Historically they have been known for ‘sludgy noise rock shifting to doom-laden despair and angular, grinding dissonance, all tied together with hardcore punk aggression.’ This time around they are bringing in guest musicians for the first time and even a guitar solo embedded within the onslaught of chugging riffs and blasting beats. As their sound has morphed over time incorporating more sludge and noise elements they’ve also made room for experimentation. Tension Between Rot and Genesis promises ‘pulverizing tones and gripping hooks emphasized by Anthesis’ blend of stylistic leanings that offer the listener a vast variety of extremes to explore, with an uncanny replay value and production that is somehow both unbelievably aggressive yet enthralling to listen to.’
Guitarist/vocalist Scott Miller commented:
‘This was the first song that I wrote for the purpose of this new album.I wanted to start with somethingsimple and chunky, but that still has our typical odd time signature groove to it. It’s a bit of a throwback to asong that we released almost 10 years ago. I’m probably the only one that’ll notice that though. Andrewwrotethe lyrics and everything came together very quickly for this track. We’ve also been playing this songlive the longest of any off ‘Tension…’.‘
Drummer/vocalist Andrew Martin added:
‘”I’d say the song is about feeling helpless while you watch therelationships of people around you fail. Youcan try to mend them yourself, but there comes a point where you need to recognize it’s out of your control.‘
