It’s almost been a tradition of 2018 for every post-metal album that has come out to be a real gem. Now that the year is almost over, alternative post-metal group Kerretta seemingly had the idea to wait just around the corner to deliver yet another surprise. The band has already put out three LPs, and is about to bless us with a fourth one. If you’ve heard of the band before, you might know that there is no way that you have actually heard the band before. Wait, let me explain: Kerretta are a band that’s constantly evolving, changing styles on a whim, and this new record is no exception. Here at Everything Is Noise, we love the diverse and stylistically confident, so we’re more than proud to present you the bands new single “Chroma Queens”.
The song opens with a hang-like synth, closely followed by a deep roaring guitar riff, with has just enough distortion to gracefully dance on the fine line between singing and growling. The upbeat drums and shifting polyrhythms make you want to bob your head in excitement, when suddenly the track shifts into full overdrive with the addition of an ridiculously heavy bass guitar. Kerretta pumps out riffs like a factory!
What is heard here is something I really love about progressive music: Kerretta take a rather simple idea and evolve it, abstract it even, to the point where it’s unrecognizable from the original idea. After one-and-a-half minutes a synth begins to take shape, bringing more color and weirdness into the track. Like an AI that went crazy, the synth holws, screaches and thrashes out. Together with the guitar, drums, and bass, it forms a beautifully blooming cacophony for the listener to enjoy. A truly stunning track!
