With each passing day, the urge to suddenly go off the grid and become a completely self-sufficient hermit becomes more and more tempting; if only I had the money to make that happen. While cutting oneself off from the rest of humanity seems like a brilliant idea at first, especially for my own mental well-being given the abysmally bleak news cycle that gets hilariously even more hopeless with each passing day, I can already anticipate the loneliness becoming the biggest challenge I’d face. While I am one to most definitely enjoy my solitude, it wouldn’t be something I could sustain indefinitely, thus I’ll have to get this ‘solace-in-solitude’ from something else entirely. Leave it to the transient yet repeatable nature of music that allows me to harness that exact feeling, giving me the mental reset that I need on standby.
Not just any music is capable of instilling this feeling of absolute inner serenity, if only it was that easy. The music in question has to be just right; something raw that taps into your inner subconscious and pulls you out of your own body, making all your problems and qualms in life fade away for a brief moment in time. If this type of musical experience and mental respite is something you’ve been searching for, knowingly or not, you’ve come to the right place as Everything Is Noise has an exclusive premiere of Magnify The Sound‘s newest single, “Searching for a quiet place”. While I’m sure we all wish we could run away from our problems, that is unfortunately far from reality, but a brief respite from time to time couldn’t hurt and Magnify The Sound provides exactly that. Aren’t we all searching for our own little quiet place after all?
“Searching for a quiet place” is the titular track that comes in anticipation of Magnify The Sound‘s upcoming sophomore album, due for release on the 27th of February through Crispin Glover/Believe Digital: Nordics. The duo of Trond Engum (guitarist) and Carl Haakon (drummer) make up the core of Magnify The Sound‘s sound (heh), although this album will feature additional instrumental embellishments in the form of voice and fiddle from Tone Åse and Sturla Eide respectively. Together, these individuals craft deeply atmospheric Norwegian folk, with subtle flavorings of drone and post metal from a compositional standpoint. The end result is music that feels like it occurs naturally in nature, as if it is the very pulse of the Earth that we inhabit.
“Searching for a quiet place” will take you places. Matter of fact, I find it difficult to not get immediately immersed by the brooding yet simultaneously tranquil soundscapes heard throughout this track. It makes me feel as if I am seeing through the eyes of a falcon soaring across gorgeously vast and untouched landscapes, not that different from the cinematic drone shots captured in the music video above. What blew me away even more was learning that this song (and the entire album) is fully improvised; something I never would’ve guessed given how meticulous and organic it all sounds. Perhaps Magnify The Sound is merely a vessel for Mother Earth’s pulse, acting as an unorthodox stethoscope for us to hear and experience it firsthand. This duo quite literally magnifies the sound of the dust we come from. In my search for this quiet place, I find something immensely profound that yields a wealth of much needed perspective about life.
If you’re anything like me (my deepest condolences to you), you’ll have added Magnify The Sound‘s Searching for a quiet place to your mental list of highly anticipated upcoming releases. I’ll tell you one thing, having an on-demand ‘quiet place’ type of album is something I’ve been desperately needing in my life lately, so the combination of knowing that this exists and the fact that we have to wait another month for it is tortuous, but better late than never I suppose. At least I can sink my teeth into this track and their debut album Don’t Give Us That Face in the meantime. Give a follow to Magnify The Sound on their socials if this is something you fancy, and pre-order the new album here!
