Cemetery Reign Unleash A “Curse Of Despair” With A Vortex Of Riffs

I used to spend a lot of time browsing through Bandcamp and underground metal blogs to find the gnarliest death metal I could. There was something about the album art, the frequently unreadable logos, and the sheer rawness of the music that drove me, overtook my brain into near obsessive levels of finding something that tripped all of the wires in my mind into pure headbanging bliss. Maybe I’ve softened with age, but nowadays I find more enjoyment from mostly other kinds of music. Sometimes, I need to scratch that itch for death metal, and today’s premiere makes for one of those days. Behold, metalheads, the latest track from Cemetery Reign, a solo project by David McMaster who also plays guitar in Street Tombs and drums in Superstition!

“Curse of Despair” starts with the kind of riffing and crushing drumming that makes you want to set fire to the nearest Fortune 500 company. Cemetery Reign‘s vocals bark and seethe amidst the maelstrom. The riffs shift and change like subtle changes in windswept sand revealing the sun bleached bones of forgotten graves, eventually morphing into mosh pit fuel that could send a circle pit into high gear. McMaster says of the track, ‘”Curse of Despair” is a song about being forced to exist, living and dying through the end times perpetually, while losing grip of all sanity,’ and you can hear the psychosis of modern existence in each change up as the song reaches its conclusion.

Cemetery Reign began as a solo project during the pandemic lockdowns, and now, Confined To Time on Carbonized Records will unleash a death metal debut to satisfy any fan of the genre. This thing is full of old school grit and contemporary disdain for an uncaring and often malicious world.
