Collapsing in despair would be an easy move even on a slow news cycle – from all directions, we’re assailed by the shitty actions of those in power and the even shittier ramifications for our everyday lives. Climate crisis, war, political kidnapping; let’s face it, we’ve seen finer days as a species. And yet, relinquishing what little agency we have to wallow in self-pity and existential dread can’t be our best answer to our struggles.
German band BRUECKEN have decided to turn their agitated state of mind into emotionally charged post-rock. The largely instrumental outfit, consisting of Thorge Freidel (guitars, programming, synths), David Barteczko (guitars), Jens Niehoff (bass, hang drum), Florian Alemi (drums), and latest addition Bernd Frikke (synths, electronics) has been forging a signature approach ever since their début in 2017 – with the new single we’re premiering today, they might be closer than ever to achieving that goal.
“questions we raise” comes as the first taste of years that answer, the band’s upcoming full-length that’s due out on February 27. ‘How do we hold on to hope?‘ is the titular question raised, and if the song’s sound palette is any indication, BRUECKEN have chosen to answer with the key words of resilience, unity, and diversity. Rumbling, darting bass lines provide the bedrock for the electronically enhanced guitarwork, while the drums press and pound in consistent forward locomotion.
Bordering on the realms of post-metal/-hardcore, “questions we raise” is a powerful reminder of why BRUECKEN should be a force to be reckoned with. It’s energetic and introspective in equal measure, which makes for an intriguing listen. The synthetic elements of the band’s sound are subtle, yet they add a lot of color to their overall presentation.
Another layer of meaning is provided by the accompanying music video, which is largely built around a man running through various locations, holding up signs and interspersed with various questions that one might have in their head every day, watching the world go crazy around them.
As mentioned before, BRUECKEN will unveil their new album years that answer on February 27 via Moment of Collapse Records; fans of muscular yet cerebral post-rock should mark the date in their calendar.
