While many bands attempt to reinvent themselves throughout their careers, French experimental post-metal group DDENT are taking massive swings and hitting home runs. We here at Everything Is Noise are pleased to premiere the live video version of DDENT’s most recent album, Feeding the Void’s Luster.
DDENT formed in the early 2010’s, helmed by guitarist and primary composer Louis Lambert. Since then, DDENT has shifted and changed, moving more towards collective conception with a new line-up, including hardcore drummer Alain Minot. And now, they are returning after a three-year hiatus to present a five-track powerhouse of an album and accompanying live video.
Feeding the Void’s Luster takes DDENT‘s signature post-rock sensibility and transforms it into something heavier, rawer, straddling the line between atmospheric black metal and melodic doom. Bassist Nicolas Zivkovich provides harsh vocals, a first for the band, adding an additional layer of intensity to the hypnotic instrumentals that DDENT finds their sonic home within. The result is a unique and mesmerizing sound with plenty of dissonance and energy that exists without sacrificing melody. Of course, this is bolstered by DDENT‘s seamless transitions from track to track in the live video, creating a truly immersive 53-minute experience.
Opening tracks “Dis à la lune qu’elle vienne” and “Longue, obscure et triste lune” are originally from DDENT‘s 2018 album TORO, and remain their most-streamed on Spotify. On Feeding the Void’s Luster, however, DDENT transform and evolve these tracks years later, infusing their new denser approach into older material, rearranging and dissecting them before meticulously putting the pieces back together.
This live recording of the LP in full was completed in only two takes, without the use of a metronome. The quasi-experimental nature is apparent, but the individual musicians of DDENT are in such lockstep throughout the performance that one can almost forget they are witnessing these consummate players create music in real time.
