I still remember listening to Behemoth’s “Conquer All” the very first time. I didn’t get it, but I got used to it and I enjoyed it. They’ve been pretty much the very first death metal band I’ve been listening to. It’s 11 years since the release of The Apostasy and Behemoth made a huge step production-wise. Their music now sounds better than ever, while their music videos are incredibly good too.
After the release of their album announcement, the band also put out a new single called “God=Dog”. The song indeed has a strange name, but offers a great mixture of modern death metal, Behemoth‘s old black metal roots and even a slight progressive rock influence. You can read more about this here.
“Wolves ov Siberia” again is a heavy single that doesn’t hide a black metal component. It’s the blast beats, the harsh guitar sound, and the chords Behemoth use to create this sound. Nergal’s voice sounds pure vicious and adds a very dry flavor to the overall raw and cold sound. Something that I really enjoy on this track is the desperate-sounding backing vocals in the song’s “chorus”. They add a great amount of feeling to the song and make it more vivid and emotionally catchy.
1:53 of playtime kicks in with a very Wolves In The Throne Room orientated riff. Fans of their latest album Thrice Woven will be reminiscent about it. A light folk-aspect combined with the use of strings and percussions creates a great counterpoint for the song’s dynamic. The dramaturgy of “Wolves ov Siberia” finds its climax in the heavy opening section that is repeated at the end. Blast beats, riffs, and pure Behemoth mayhem. That’s what we want, right?
The song comes with a rather modest video. There are wolves catching a woman and finally eating here, which is fairly unspectacular. But the graphics match the song’s vibe and are fun to watch.
